Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Saigo Takamori

Comments - Terrific portrait of Saigo Takamori, the leader of the rebel samurai during the Satsuma Rebellion against the Meiji Imperial government. He is shown wearing a black military uniform trimmed with braid and fringed epaulets, a red and silver print sash across his chest. He stares up over his shoulder with an angry expression, his brows furrowed, clenching his plume hat in his hand. A nice bold image of this famous warrior, set against a background shaded from dusky blue to green.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/2" + left margin as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Vertical fold near left edge. Separation and thinning along fold line, small loss in left margin, a few small holes, repaired, blends well. Slight creasing, slight rubbing near left edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
