July: Lotus Blossom

Series; Twelve Months of Flowers, 1880

July: Lotus Blossom - Great kabuki portrait Onoe Kikugoro V as the adventurer Tenjiku Tokubei, striking a pose with his hand held out before him in alarm. He stares over his shoulder with a worried grimace, dressed in a blue and white print kamishimo over an ornate elegant brocade kimono. His hair is pulled back into a neat topknot with longer wings of hair combed back atop his head, and flared sideburns. A diagonal line separates the bold red tie-dyed textile pattern behind the figure from a beautiful view of blossoming lotus plants. The pink and white flowers are delicately embossed, a nice touch. Includes additional embossing in the white kimono trim. A handsome design.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 14 1/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Some slight toning in subject. Some minor spotting or staining as shown. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
