Celebration After the Pacification of the Rebels of Kagoshima, 1877

Comments - Terrific scene of a celebration taking place following the end of the Satsuma Rebellion. Imperial Army officers celebrate the victory over rebel samurai at Kagoshima with a dance performance and sake in an elegantly furnished room. In the center, a shirabyoshi dancer strikes a graceful pose with her fan extended, flipping her flowing kimono sleeve in the air. Behind her, two small girls play flute and hand drum. On either side, seated officers drink sake from large, shallow red lacquer cups, with beauties carrying long-handled sake servers to refill their cups. The wear military uniforms with black jackets trimmed with fringed epaulets and sashes across their chests. A fascinating historical subject, with burnishing in the black jackets and embossing in the white kimono.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/2" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. A few holes and tears in subject and along edges, all repaired from reverse. One minor stain in left-hand panel with areas of rubbing and fraying in margins. Faint spotting and soiling in subject. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
