There Stands No Enemy Where We Go: Surrender of Pyongyang from a series on the Sino-Japanese War, 1894

Comments - Dramatic scene from the battle at Pyongyang during the Sino-Japanese War. In the center, a Japanese officer and a Chinese soldier on horseback duel with swords as they gallop past each other. Below them, Imperial Army troops rush forward on foot to meet the enemy, one soldier grabbing a Chinese man by his pigtail and yanking him backwards. Several enemies tumble over each other to the ground, while the Chinese troops behind them seem alarmed by the chaos. Shots explode in the sky at left, and large clouds of smoke and dust billow up from the battlefield. A handsome composition, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and soft bokashi shading and a dusting of mica in the sky.

Artist - Toshikata (1866 - 1908)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/8" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams and backed with thin paper. Slight toning in top margin with a few small stains in right-hand panel. Faint spotting and soiling in subject with one area of thinning along left edge of left-hand panel. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
