Series; Modern Girls as the Seven Komachi

Goyo Studio Reprints - Hashiguchi Goyo is the undisputed master of the 20th century shin-hanga movement. A secondary part of his career was reprinting beautiful old ukiyo-e designs from the golden age of the Japanese woodblock print. Between 1918 and 1920, much of Goyo’s artistic work was devoted to creating these incredible woodblock reprints of classic ukiyo-e prints. Each image was painstakingly copied from an original and stamped with the Goyo circular seal. Line by line, color by color, the prints were recreated in Goyo’s studio to perfectly emulate these masterworks of ukiyo-e. Goyo took pride in this work and the release of his reprints was met with great acclaim.

Today, original Goyo reprints are highly sought after by collectors and rare to find. This is an exceptional opportunity!

Komachi Washing the Manuscript - Attractive portrait from a series pairing beauties with seven episodes from the life of the famous poetess Ono no Komachi. Here, beauty brushes her teeth, kneeling next to a basin of water and holding a toothbrush, a mirror and towel on the floor nearby. She wears a flowing floral kimono over a red under robe, her hair pulled back into a smooth knot. The image refers to a scene of Ono no Komachi washing a book in a basin of water. On the night before a poetry contest, one of Komachi's rivals heard her reciting her poem, and hoping to discredit her, copied the verse into a book to accuse her of plagiarism. Komachi discovered the trick, and washed away the fresh ink. A handsome design.
