Enjoying a Comparison of the Flowers of the Four Seasons, 1880

Comments - Handsome image of the Meiji Emperor and Empress enjoying the flowers of the four seasons. The emperor wears an ornately detailed military uniform trimmed with gold braid and fringe epaulets, a sword at his side. The empress smiles at right, wearing a purple kimono patterned with waterwheels and birds in flight above stylized tie-dyed waves. Her hair is combed smoothly back and adorned with a comb and floral ornaments. Colorful flowers fill the background against a vibrant red sky, including white peonies, narcissuses, cherry blossoms, and chrysanthemums. Detailed with delicate embossing in the white kimono and the peonies, and burnishing in the black jacket. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.

Image Size - 28 1/2" x 14 1/8" + margins as shown
