Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Parody at Honnoji, 1883

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of the last moments of the great warrior Oda Nobunaga, just before his death at Honnoji Temple in 1582. While at the temple with only a few of his guards, Nobunaga was surrounded by enemy troops, forcing him to commit suicide rather than be captured. Here, he lifts a drapery overhead, staring out at one of his retainers with a stricken expression, gripping a naginata in his other hand. The warrior at left regards him sternly, while the fellow in the center attacks an enemy with his spear. Fighting can be seen on the grounds below, with figures in dark silhouette, and red flames and orange smoke drifting across the night sky. Nakamura Shikan appears as Oda Nobunaga. A handsome design, beautifully detailed with embossing in Nobunaga's white kimono and fine bokashi shading in the night sky.
