Street Knights Arguing, 1874

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of three otokodate or street knights arguing beneath a blossoming cherry tree. From right, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro as Nozarashi Gohei, Nakamura Shikan as Maboroshi Chobei, and Bando Hikosaburo as Ukiyo Tohei. At left, Gohei turns his head away with a sneer, wearing a purple kimono with an eerie pattern of skulls and bones. In the center, Chobei thrusts his arm out in a stopping motion as Tohei raises a sandal above his head, ready to use it as a weapon. Tohei stares at his companion with a tight-lipped frown, his kimono decorated with an image of hell, complete with demons and flames, and a mirror that reflects the viewer's sins. A great design with large expressive figures, set off by a dramatic deep red sky.
