Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Heroes of Kagoshima, 1877

Comments - Terrific group portrait of the heroes of the Satsuma Rebellion. Saigo Takamori, the leader of the rebel samurai sits at top center wearing a fine military uniform and a plumed hat, staring sternly to the side. He is surrounded by warrior in both traditional and Western dress, some wearing armor. At bottom center, two men examine a map, while at lower left, a kneeling man grips a rifle. The white banner fluttering above features a slogan that was fabricated for the rebels by woodblock print artists, "A New Government, Rich in Virtue." The slogan was never actually used by Saigo, whose flags featured the crest of the Shimazu Clan of Satsuma, which appears on the purple drapery hanging overhead. A great image with expressive figures and vibrant color.
