Emperor Kameyama, 1879

Series; A Short Illustrated History of Japan (Dai Nippon shiyaku zue)

Emperor Kameyama, 1879 - Incredible design from Yoshitoshi's series of triptychs depicting legends and events from the history of Japan. This dramatic scene shows the attempted execution of the Buddhist priest Nichiren during the reign of Emperor Kameyama. The priest's life was saved by a miracle when rays from the sun shattered the sword of the samurai about to execute him. The priest prays serenely, kneeling with clasped hands under a tall pine tree as winds gust through the samurai encampment, knocking over retainers and whipping up waves. The executioner's sword breaks into several pieces as he is blown backwards, the men behind him crying out in terror. A fantastic Yoshitoshi image with the shafts of light radiating across the landscape amidst the driving rain and wind. A great design from this fine series.
