Social Progress: A Comparison of Ladies, 1888

Comments - Attractive triptych depicting modern Meiji era ladies strolling through a garden on an autumn day. The women are fashionable attired in the latest Western styles, wearing dresses with full skirts and bustles, and colorful bonnets adorned with feathers and ribbons. Several carry umbrellas trimmed with fringe. A military officer at right watches the beauties with interest as they walk along a narrow stream winding through the landscape. Maple trees, chrysanthemums, and sago palms frame a view of the ocean in the distance. A lovely image, detailed with burnishing in the black dress and military uniform, and fine bokashi shading in the water and sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28" + margins
