The Arrival of the Crown Prince of Russia, 1891

Comments - Fantastic depiction of the arrival of the Tsar Nicholas II of Russia on a visit to Japan in 1891. Dressed in a red uniform adorned with medals, the prince is greeted by a group of Japanese dignitaries and generals on shore. At lower right, Russian soldiers wearing black jackets, blue pants, and blue helmets stand along the edge of the wharf carrying rifles with bayonets fixed. The enormous Russian warship dominates the harbor, flying a striped flag with a double-headed eagle. Smaller boats ferry soldiers across the water, the men climbing ashore at right. Later during the trip, a Japanese man attempted to assassinate Prince Nicholas, an event that became known as the Otsu Incident. An incredible scene of this important historic occasion, beautifully detailed and vibrantly colored, with extensive burnishing in the black areas. A great choice for a student of history.
