Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of actors offstage enjoying an evening of entertainment on a verandah. The group is gathered around a meal set out on a black lacquer tray on the floor, the man in the center grinning up at a beauty who leans against him, a cup of sake in his hand. The woman smiles back at him as she reaches into her tobacco pouch to fill her pipe. At left, a beauty brings in a shamisen to provide music. Beyond the railing, rooftops frame a view of the river dotted with pleasures boats beneath a softly shaded night sky. Wonderful detail in the figures and household furnishings. A charming Edo era subject.
