47 Ronin, Act 4, 1854

Comments - Handsome illustration from Act 4 of the classic kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura" showing Lord Hangan in his mansion committing seppuku or ritual suicide. Attired in a white kimono, he grimaces in pain as he thrusts the knife into his belly, blood soaking his robes. His faithful retainer Yuranosuke kneels before him, vowing to avenge his master's death. A cloud like-border separate the figures from the scene in Act 3 of the quarrel between Lord Hangan and Lord Moronao, in which Hangan struck Moronao with his sword while inside the Imperial Palace, an offense punishable by death, resulting in his suicide. The actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as both Oboshi Yuranosuke and Kono Moronao, and Arashi Kichisaburo III as Enya Hangan. A dramatic moment from this legendary story of honor and revenge, detailed with burnishing in Yuranosuke's black kimono, embossing in the white kimono, and soft bokashi shading in the background. A great choice for a collector interested in this famous tale.
