Original Kunitoshi (1847 - 1899) Japanese Woodblock Print
Meiji Procession, 1881

Comments - Handsome aerial view of a Meiji era procession making its way along a curving street in the city. Soldiers on horseback carrying pennants are followed by horse-drawn carriages, with crowds lining the street and Japanese flags framing doorways. The procession will pass under a large clock tower with a Western clock as it approaches a modern brick building with glass windows. Shinobazu Pond can be seen at lower left, with a torii gate and stairs leading to a shrine nestled among the trees at left, with Kiyomizu Temple at right. Cherry trees covered with bright pink blossoms add lively color to the expansive scene. An interesting Meiji subject, nicely colored and detailed.

Artist - Kunitoshi (1847 - 1899)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Lightly toned throughout a few areas of ink offsetting in subject. Some small holes and areas of thinning along edges, all repaired from reverse. Minor spotting and soiling in margins. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
