Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Traveling Samurai, 1884

Comments - Intriguing scene of a pair of samurai stopping for the evening while traveling. In the center, a commoner bows respectfully towards a young warrior carrying a straw raincoat under his arm. He scowls back at him, holding a unusual woven hat with a tall, narrow black crown tied with a red ribbon. He wears an orange and purple print kimono over a chest plate and upper body armor, his hair pulled back into a thick ponytail. His companion wears a blue robe patterned with fishes and a small black lacquer court cap. The commoner wears a straw raincoat over his olive green robe, and a groom behind him leads away a horse with a large bundle tied onto its back. Misty black clouds fill the gray evening sky, giving it a menacing appearance above trees seen in dark silhouette. A handsome design with beautifully drawn, realistic figures and fine bokashi shading in the background.
