Comments - Incredible depiction from the last stand of the great warrior Kusunoki Masatsura at the Battle of Shijonawate in 1348. Masatsura was a supporter of the Southern Emperor Go-Daigo during the 14th century Nanbokucho Wars against the Northern Empire established by the Ashikaga, and died fighting against Northern supporters. This scene shows his loyal retainers during the Battle of Shijonawate under a hail of arrows. At left, Noda Shiro kneels atop an enemy with his bloody sword pointed at the captive's neck. His armor is pierced with many arrows and stained with blood, and blood runs down his forehead from a wound. In the center, Koshiro Hyogo plants his foot atop a fallen horse, gripping a blood-stained spear with both hands. At right, Masayuki grimaces angrily as he draws his sword back behind his head, gripping the hair of an enemy with his other hand, ready to decapitate his victim. A fantastic composition with large expressive figures set against the dark night sky and arrows flying everywhere. Beautiful color and detail in the armor and weapons, with fine bokashi shading in the background
