Tea Ceremony, 1888

Series; Etiquette for Ladies

Tea Ceremony, 1888 - Beautiful print of a tea ceremony taking place in a teahouse set in a lovely garden. The host uses a whisk to mix the green tea in a small bowl, while her guests sit patiently, hands in their laps, except for the small child at right, who leans forward eagerly. A puff of white steam rises from the container of water resting on a brazier in the center of the floor, the container detailed with shimmering mica. Two beauties wave goodbye under a fruit tree at the garden gate outside. A charming image of this time honored tradition, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Would make an attractive display.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams and backed with thin paper. A couple small tears repaired from reverse with one faint vertical crease running through subject. One stain in center panel with areas of light spotting and soiling in subject and along edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
