Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Fishermen Laughing at a Man, 1893

Comments - Interesting triptych depicting a group of fishermen laughing at a man kneeling on the ground. Dressed in a blue robe with a yellow lining, the bearded looks down with a sad expression, hunching forward as he sits on the shore. The fisherman at left bends over and points at him, while another fellow hangs above him, laughing and extending his leg. Two others grin wildly at right, one resting his hands on his knees as he leans forward. Large baskets of fish and abalone rest on the ground nearby, with a pine tree at left framing a view of the calm water, and mountains in the distance at right. A handsome design with fine detail in the exotic costumes and soft bokashi shading in the background.
