Series; Twelve Months of Customs and Manners in Edo

Twelfth Month: Watching a Play - Lovely triptych depicting upper-class ladies enjoying a year-end theater performance at a daimyo's palace. The guest of honor sits on a cushion at far right, surrounded by her attendants who kneel along either side of the room. The actors perform on a low platform, enacting a scene featuring the wild woman Yamauba and her son Kintaro, along with a woodsman sitting on a bundle of brush. Wonderful detail in the elegant interior setting and fine kimono worn by the beauties, including delicate embossing on the white collars. A handsome design.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams and backed with thin paper. Faint spotting in subject with one vertical crease running through subject. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
