Visiting a Shrine in Snow, 1884

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of a group visiting a shrine in winter. At right, a couple shares an umbrella, the beauty smiling slyly as she watches her companion out of the corners of her eyes. He frowns angrily at the man standing at left, who regards him with a solemn expression. A young girl holds up an ema or votive plaque to be left at the shrine, looking rather worried with her hand to her lip and her mouth slightly agape. A large stone statue of a deity looms behind them as snow falls heavily over the wintry blue sky. A handsome design with large expressive figures and an interesting setting, with fine bokashi shading in the sky and burnishing in the black kimono trim and obi.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 27"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Minor soiling and rubbing in subject with a couple small stains near edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
