Decorations for the Doll Festival, circa 1807

Comments - Wonderful scene of beauties preparing for the annual Doll Festival and Girls' Day. At right, a standing woman prepares to place a doll on the large tiered display behind her, which features figures from court life as well as lucky gods, along with offerings. At left, a young girl carries an offering tray with two vases on it to add to the exhibit. Two beauties kneeling on the floor unpack other items for the celebration, with a small black lacquer chest on the floor nearby and a large basket of mochi cakes at right. Another woman kneels in the doorway, holding her kimono sleeve to her mouth as she watches. The room opens onto a charming view of a garden with blossoming cherry trees and pines. Nicely detailed with touches of embossing, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist - Hokusai (1760 - 1849)

Image Size - 10 3/8" x 14 3/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Lightly toned throughout with remnants from previous backing on reverse. Some soiling along edges with one very small hole in center of print. Faint creasing and spotting in subject with a few small stains near bottom and left-hand edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
