Original Hokusai (1760 - 1849) Japanese Woodblock Print
Koko-ji Temple in Autumn

From the Collection of Dr. L. Baret - Handsome landscape view by Hokusai from the collection of Dr L. Baret of France. Not much is known about Dr. Baret, but he published a book in French on Japanese dress in 1892. He also wrote an article in a French medical journal about the relationship between Japanese clothing and customs, and health (Journal d'hygiene, Avril 1892). Two of the prints feature small stickers identifying the collection on the reverse, and two include the subject and artist name in pencil on reverse (in French). These images are wonderfully detailed and colored, and feature Hokusai's characteristically expressive figures. A great choice to collect a lively original Hokusai design with an interesting provenance.

Artist - Hokusai (1760 - 1849)

Image Size - 9 1/4" x 6"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Lightly toned throughout and backed with thin paper. A couple areas of thinning at corners. Faint remnants from previous mounting with one small paper label containing collection information on reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
