Shinto Deities

Comments - Intriguing triptych depicting a number of Shinto deities. The right panel features a famous incident involving the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu. Angered by her brother's actions, Amaterasu locked herself in a cave, plunging the world into darkness. Other gods gathered around the entrance, playing music to coax Amaterasu from her hiding place. When she heard all the noise, she came to the entrance, sending a glow of light across the landscape. Here, a man moves an enormous boulder away from the cave, as rays of red and yellow light radiate from Amaterasu's head. In the center, another man holds a mirror, reflecting the goddess's likeness, a giant serpent winding behind him. At left, two women offer trays of rice and fish to an elderly man carrying a wooden walking staff, while above them, a bearded man with a fishing rod sits atop a strange sea creature with a palace appearing in the mist above his head. A fascinating scene, wonderfully detailed.
