Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the Meiji Emperor and Empress leaving the Imperial Palace for the promulgation of the new constitution. They ride in an ornate carriage drawn by a team of six white horses, with a uniformed driver sitting in front. The carriage is topped with a golden phoenix and features the chrysanthemum mon or crest of the Meiji Imperial family. Behind them, other carriages cross over the bridge from the Imperial Palace, the stone walls of the fortress rising into the sky. An incredibly detailed image and a fascinating look at the pomp and circumstance surrounding this important event. Includes burnishing in the black uniforms and fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, attached at the seams and backed with thin paper. A few small holes and areas of thinning at top and bottom edge of center panel, all repaired from reverse. Vertical creasing in subject with minor ink offsetting in left-hand margin and lower half of subject. Lightly toned along top edge with some soiling in subject. Please see photos for details.
