Evil Magician Nikki Danjo and Date Clan Heir

Comments - Terrific illustration from a kabuki play based on the disputed succession of the Date Clan. At left, the evil magician Nikki Danjo, who transformed himself into a giant rat in order to steal an important scroll, appears in a pale gray kimono, tossing his hand in the air with a defiant expression. In the center, the loyal nursemaid Masaoka is shown with her son and the young heir, whom she has been keeping safe in the women's quarters of the palace. At right, the samurai Otokonosuke grips a short knife as he faces Danjo, leaning forward aggressively. His red stage makeup and voluminous robes give him an imposing appearance as he attempts to protect the heir. An intriguing treatment of this popular kabuki play, with the two large figures nicely framing the center scene.
