September: Autumn Garden

Series; Twelve Months of Beauties, 1898

September: Autumn Garden - Attractive view of a garden in early autumn, with tall grasses and late blossoms framing a winding stream dotted with stepping stones. At left, a woman shares a poem slip with a friend, who shyly hides her mouth behind a cloth handkerchief. Just below, a young boy reaches for a butterfly fluttering about as his mother hurries after him. He wears a blue tie-dyed kimono and a straw hat tied under his chin with a red ribbon. In the center, a young girl looks up with a smile, enjoying the fall weather. Beautifully detailed with burnishing in the women's hair and fine bokashi shading in the sky. A charming subject.

Artist - Shuntei (1873 - 1914)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/8" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams and backed with thin paper. Lightly toned throughout with minor spotting and soiling in subject. Slight rubbing along edges with one area of ink offsetting in right-hand panel. A few small holes and at corners, repaired from reverse with backing paper. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
