Comments - Dramatic illustration of a battle in the mist in Mina Province from "The Taiheiki," the epic tale of the warring period between the Northern and Southern courts in Japan. In the center, a warrior on a rearing horse rises in the saddle as he stabs an enemy in the neck with his spear. Blood gushes from the wound as the samurai tumbles to the ground, grimacing in pain and terror. At left, an opponent's helmet flies off through the air, along with his sword as he falls backwards, while other enemies are trampled beneath the horse's hooves. The battle continues in the distance, with troops silhouetted in black against misty gray sky. A terrific composition filled with energy and action, with wonderfully expressive figures and fine coloring. A great early Yoshitoshi samurai subject.
