Firefly by Uemura Shoen (1875 - 1949)

Original Uemura Shoen (1875 - 1949) Japanese Woodblock Print
Firefly

Comments - Beautiful shin hanga portrait of a beauty sitting on a bamboo bench, watching a glowing firefly fluttering about the evening sky behind her. She looks over her shoulder with a sweet expression, a delicate pink flush on her cheeks and earlobe, and deeper pink lips. Her hair is pulled back into a tall knot, adorned with a tortoiseshell comb and hairpins. She wears a deep violet kimono with a design of white blossoms and leaves on the sleeve, tied with a tie-dyed pale blue obi. In 1948, Uemura Shoen became the first female artist to receive Japan's Order of Cultural Merit. A lovely image in an unusually large format that would make a wonderful framed display. This is a posthumous printing.

Artist - Uemura Shoen (1875 - 1949)

Image Size - 15 1/4" x 18 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Faint crease across top edge of image, slight creasing at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
