Original Iwao Akiyama (born 1921) Japanese Woodblock Print
Never Sleeping, 1978

Iwao Akiyama - Born in 1921, Iwao Akiyama studied woodblock printing under the great sosaku hanga (creative prints) artist Shiko Munakata. Akiyama's charming and whimsical designs are rendered primarily in black and gray, often with a touch of bright red, with a very painterly feel similar to that of sumi ink paintings. His favorite subjects include owls, cats, Buddhist imagery, and nudes. Akiyama is well-known in Japan, and has exhibited internationally, with works in museum collections across the globe. Each limited edition work is pencil signed, numbered, and dated. A wonderful choice for a collector of modern Japanese prints, with a real graphic impact that would make a great framed statement.
