Series; Mirror of Famous Generals of Our Country

Shimamura Danjo Takanori, 1858 - Fantastic portrait of the Heike samurai Shimamura Danjo Takanori sitting on a rock and grimacing angrily, his long hair flowing over his shoulders. Facing defeat of the Taira at the naval battle of Dan-no-ura, Shimamura Danjo Takanori and many fellow samurai committed suicide by leaping into the sea, following their leader Taira no Tomomori. The crabs in this area became known as Heike crabs, because the shells bear a pattern resembling a face, said to be that of the drowned Heike warriors. Takanori is shown with an enormous Heike crab at his feet and a full moon glowing at upper left surrounded by misty clouds. The sword he grips is battered and notched from the fierce battle prior to his death. A terrific image of this famous tale.
