Comments - Fantastic illustration of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's conquest of the island of Shikoku in 1585, when he invaded and seized the island from Chosokabe Motochika. In the foreground, two warriors on horseback are dueling with pole arms, the lively black horse at left rearing on its hind legs as the samurai thrusts his weapon forward. A man on the ground between the two men seems to be refereeing the fighting under the watchful eye of a general seated on horseback behind him, gripping a tasseled command baton. The other samurai are gathered around watching solemnly, dressed in full armor with an array of standards and flags fluttering overhead. A dramatic image with lively color and wonderful detail.
