Gentoku Leaping on Horseback into the Gorge of Tan, 1853

Comments - Terrific illustration from the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a historical novel written about the three warring kingdoms in third century China. In the center, the hero Gentoku has plunged into the river of the Tan Gorge, fighting the rushing current as he makes his way across. His horse whinnies with fear, raising its head above the neck deep water, Gentoku clinging to his mount as water sprays around him. An ox boy waits for him on the other side, sitting atop his animal and calmly playing the flute. At right, a warrior stands on the rugged cliff, watching Gentoku's progress with worry, gesturing excitedly. He wears an exotic robe trimmed with ruffles, his men peering from under a rocky outcropping behind him. At upper right, men gallop along a road bordered with a low crenellated wall, and clouds drift across the rugged landscape. A fantastic, dynamic composition with beautiful color and detail.
