Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Record of the Kagoshima Suppression, 1877

Comments - Fantastic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of Saigo Takamori and rebel samurai under attack by the Japanese Imperial fleet along the shore of Kagoshima Bay. Saigo is shown on horseback at right in a black military uniform, gesturing with his sword as he looks down at the troops landing on the beach below and engaging the rebels. Several ships steam across the harbor, flying Japanese flags. The white banner at right features a slogan that was fabricated for the rebels by woodblock print artists, "A New Government, Rich in Virtue." The slogan was never actually used by Saigo, whose red and white flags shown here feature the crest of the Shimazu Clan of Satsuma. A dramatic image from this historic conflict, detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and ships.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 3/4" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached the seams. A few areas of ink offsetting and tearing along edges. A couple areas of light spotting in subject with some minor thinning at corners. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
