The Occupation of Yongcheng, 1895

Comments - Lively scene of Meiji soldiers attacking Chinese forces at Yongcheng during the Sino-Japanese War. In the center, a shell explodes on the ground in a burst of flames and smoke, causing a Japanese officer's horse to rear back as the soldier raises his sword overhead, ready to strike an enemy falling from his horse at left. Several Chinese are sprawled on the ground amidst the clouds of smoke, as more Japanese troops rush forward on foot at right, a mounted officer urging them forward with his waving sword. The Chinese are defending a fortress that is on fire, with a plume of orange smoke rising skywards at left. A great image from this historic conflict, filled with energy and action.
