Elderly Woman Meeting a Daimyo Kuchi-e Print

The Kuchi-e Tradition - Kuchi-e prints are woodblock frontispiece illustrations used in the publication of Japanese novels and magazines around the turn of the 20th century. Most kuchi-e prints were illustrations of bijin and continued the tradition of idealized beauties in Japanese art. The subjects, however, have a decidedly Meiji era feel about them and reflect the artistic movement towards more western design. Kuchi-e prints typically have one or two folds because of their use.

Much interest has been generated in the subject since the publication of Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada's book, "Woodblock Kuchi-e Prints: Reflections of Meiji Culture." Kuchi-e prints have become highly sought after and collected by the serious collector.

Comments - Handsome kuchi-e design of an elderly woman having an audience with a daimyo. She kneels before him, her long gray hair pulled into a low knot over her back, her kimono patterned with maple leaves and flowing water trailing onto the floor beside her. He sits on a cushion at right, one hand atop an armrest, looking down with a thoughtful expression. Two retainers kneel at left, their heads slightly bowed and eyes downcast, the large lamp in the center casting a soft glow against the pale gray background. An interesting scene detailed with burnished lines to indicate the folds of the daimyo's black robe.

Artist - Tomioka Eisen (1864 - 1905)

Image Size - 11 3/4" x 8 1/2"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Two light creases, as with all kuchi-e prints (because of their use). A few small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
