The Twelfth Month

Series; Famous Views for the Twelve Months, 1882

The Twelfth Month - Great kabuki portrait of the actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX portraying Sakai Saemon in the play "Taiko no Oto Chiyu Sanryaku." Saemon is a loyal retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the play concerns an attack on Hamamatsu Castle, which is depicted in the fan-shaped inset above by artist Kyosai. His long hair pulled back into a loose ponytail, Saemon takes his position in a drum tower, gripping a support post with one hand and clutching a drumstick in the other as he watches for the enemy. A great design from this attractive series, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair. This image appears on page of 48 of Amy Reigle Newland's recent book, "Time Present and Time Past: Images of a Forgotten Master, Toyoharu Kunichika."
