Kyodo Risshi no Motoi

Tango no Tsubone - Attractive image of the beautiful Tango no Tsubone writing a farewell letter to her lover just prior to her execution. She sits on a straw mat along the shore, looking down thoughtfully at the paper in her lap, a brush in her hand. The executioner kneels behind her holding his sword. According to legend, her farewell poem so moved the samurai set to behead her that he let her go. The colorful figure is set off by the rugged cliffs looming behind her, with waves lapping at the beach. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and delicate embossing in the white kimono.

Artist - Toshikata (1866 - 1908)

Image Size - 9 1/4" x 14"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Some light ink bleed. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
