The Golden Pavilion - Fantastic illustration from the kabuki play "Gion Sairei Shinkoki," which takes place at the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto. The evil samurai Daizen has been holding the lovely Princess Yuki against her will, trying to force her to paint a dragon on the ceiling of the Golden Pavilion. The daughter of a famous artist, Yuki refuses the task, as well as his unwanted advances. He threatens to kill husband, standing under a cherry tree and brandishing his sword as the warrior Tokichi watches from right, preparing to rescue the beauty. He wears a black robe patterned with feathers and swirling clouds over a pale kimono with an intricate brocade pattern. A dragon appears in the rushing waterfall at left, the spirit of the dragon that taught Princess Yuki's father the secret of painting. A powerful image with the evil lord dominating the scene with his physical presence. Wonderful detail in the elegant fabrics, including delicate embossing in the white kimono trim and burnishing in the black robe. A terrific interpretation of this classic kabuki subject.
