Meiji Empress Viewing the Moon, 1880

Comments - Beautiful triptych showing the Meiji Empress standing on a verandah at Hama Palace, viewing the moon. She wears a gorgeous outer robe patterned with dragons over a white kimono tucked into red hakama pants, the fabric trailing on the floor around her. She holds a fan trimmed with colorful ribbons and wears an ornate headpiece. Two ladies-in-waiting bring in trays covered with purple cloth, while a third carries a tasseled cushion. The full moon glows high in the evening sky, framed by a misty cloud, and an elegant palace building can be seen at left. Beautifully detailed with embossing in the white kimono, soft shading in the sky and water, and vibrant color. A striking design.
