Umbrella Giveaway

Series; Outer Chiyoda Palace (Chiyoda no on-omote)

Umbrella Giveaway - Fascinating triptych of an event where the shogun is giving away free umbrellas to the people. Chaos ensues as men struggle over the pile of umbrellas while the shogun's retainers look on. Interesting traditional architectural elements in the three buildings of the palace that are visible. In the foreground, a beautiful tiled roof features a large ceramic carp decoration. At upper left, a Noh theater performance takes place with performers on stage as the characters Jo and Uba in a play about the spirits of the pine trees of Takasago and Sumiyoshi. An intriguing subject.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/4"
