Kokiro Teahouse at Edomachi in the Shin Yoshiwara

Comments - Attractive triptych depicting courtesans gathered on the upper story of the Kokiro Teahouse at Edomachi in the Shin Yoshiwara. The elegantly dressed beauties and their kamuro or child apprentices line the verandah railing in the foreground, chatting with each other and enjoying the view. The courtesan in the center wears a blue kimono patterned with ribbons and tied with a black obi featuring a turtle with moss flowing from its shell, a symbol of longevity. The woman at far left wears a robe with a design of white rabbits. Rooms extend into the distance, and ornate lanterns hang from the eaves overhead. A lively image with vibrant color and wonderful detail, including touches of burnishing.
