Descending Geese at Yahagi Bridge, 1868 - Fantastic triptych showing a scene from the life of the great Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who is regarded as Japan's second great unifier. As a child, the young Hideyoshi ran away from an apprenticeship, living as a beggar and sleeping wherever he could find shelter. One night while sleeping on Yahagi-bashi Bridge, he was awakened by Hachisuka Koruku and his gang of robbers, who tripped over him in the dark. Here, the boy grabs hold of the end of Koruku's spear, demanding an apology for rudely awakening him. The angry samurai beside him draws back his arm as if to slap the child, while another jabs at him with a flaming torch. Another man leers at him while leaning on his large hatchet. The full moon is shrouded in eerie dark clouds as a line of geese descends for the evening's rest. A magnificent image with terrific expressive faces and fine detail. An incredible depiction of this legendary event.
