Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a samurai during an audience with a daimyo. Kneeling in the center, he angrily raises his folding fan above his head, thrusting his other arm out before him. An enormous red lacquer sake cup sits on an offering tray before him. At right, the daimyo glares back at him with furrowed brows as he sits beside a standing screen. Another samurai watches with a tight-lipped frown. He wears a blue dotted kamishimo over an olive green kimono, his leaf and wisteria blossom crest emblazoned on the shoulders and sleeve. The same crest is repeated across the background in a variety of softly shaded colors, creating a striking backdrop. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan, Ichikawa Sadanji as Hara Saisuke (actually Baba Saburobei), and Ichikawa Danjuro. An attractive design.
