The Great Wada Rebellion in the Fifth Month of 1213, 1855

Comments - Fantastic battle scene from the 13th century Wada rebellion against the Hojo. In the center, a warrior on horseback rips the shoulder plate from an enemy on the ground, sending him tumbling backwards. He grips an iron club in his other hand, glaring furiously as the wind whips his long hair back from his face. At right, a samurai on a dappled horse leaps across the castle moat, men waving anxiously at him from the far shore. At left, another mounted samurai battles men on the ground with his sword, sending his opponent flying. The fight takes place at the entrance to a castle, a stone wall rising behind the combatants and the moat extending at right. A lively design with wonderful detail in the armor and expressive faces, and beautiful rich color. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
