Nakamura Kamenojo as Okaru

Series; Lacquer Sake Cups with Portraits of Actors (Haiyu Maki-e Sakazuki), 1863

Nakamura Kamenojo as Okaru - Terrific design from a fine Kunisada II series featuring kabuki actor portraits as reflected in red lacquer sake cups. The portraits are beautifully drawn with fine line work and expressive faces, set off by the vibrant red of the cup. Japanese maple leaves and curving sweeps of softly shaded blue in the background suggest autumn breezes, with embossed lines indicating the direction of the wind. These wonderful designs are printed to the highest standards, and many include deluxe treatments such as burnishing or embossing. A striking format and a rarely seen series. A great choice for a kabuki enthusiast.
