Beauty Rescuing a Banner, 1852

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a beauty rescuing a banner with the paulownia crest of the Minamoto Clan on it. Gripping the cloth between her teeth, she clings to an oar wielded by a retainer on a Taira ship as white-capped waves splash about her. He scowls down at her from the elegant ship, which features a dragon motif along the side and the Taira butterfly crest on the prow. A white-haired nobleman sits at right beneath a butterfly patterned drapery, looking up with an unhappy expression. A striking design, nicely composed and colored.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 29 3/4" x 14 1/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. A few small holes and losses repaired from reverse as shown. Some light toning at edges. A couple minor creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
