Beauty and Samurai at a Temple

Comments - Unusual format three panel kabuki scene featuring a beauty and two samurai at a temple in winter. The woman stands on the verandah of the shrine, a heavy robe draped over her shoulders, reading a long letter. She looks down at the men with a rather crazed expression, smiling with eyes wide. Below, the samurai at left looks up with a worried frown, holding an umbrella. He wears a black kimono patterned with gourds and vines, and tall wooden geta sandals. The fellow at right carries a dead duck in one hand, grimacing angrily, dressed in a matching green brocade kamishimo and kimono. An intriguing scene in a very interesting format with nice expressive figures.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - Approximately 29 1/4" x 19 5/8"
