Series; Stories by Bakin

Chikanobu's Stories by Bakin - Terrific design from Chikanobu's series "Stories of Bakin," based on tales by the Edo-era writer Kyokutei Bakin. The author is perhaps best known for his novel "The Eight Dog Heroes of the Satomi Clan of Nanso," but he wrote many works based on samurai themes, focusing on honor and family loyalty. Published from 1890-1891, these great images feature Chikanobu's characteristic attention to detail, with creative compositions and vibrant color. Many include deluxe printing techniques such as embossing and burnishing. A very rarely seen series and a fine choice for a Chikanobu collector.

Priest Raigo's Mysterious Rat by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) - Fantastic illustration of the famous tale of the Priest Raigo of Mii Temple. Through Raigo's prayers, a male heir was born to the Emperor Shirakawa, who promised Raigo anything he wanted in return. However, the priest requested a raised prayer platform only granted to warrior monks, so the emperor refused. The infuriated priest returned to Mii Temple where he starved himself and cursed the emperor. After dying, his vengeful spirit changed into thousands of rats that destroyed the sacred books of the temple. He appears here sitting outside a cave, chanting his curses as rats begin to scamper down all over him. A young warrior monk watches with a frown at left, gripping a shakujou, a traditional pilgrim's staff topped with a ringed finial. His gray outer robe is pushed down to the waist, revealing a striking red kimono patterned with dragons over his armor. A terrific image from this fascinating legend.
