Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty with a Doll and a Cat Kakemono, circa early 1830s

Comments - Beautiful kakemono or vertical diptych of a young woman watching with amusement as a cat pounces on her flowing kimono sleeve. She looks down with a smile, shyly holding her kimono sleeve to her chin and cradling a baby doll in her arm. Her gray kimono is patterned with butterflies in brown, blue, and white, tied with a black obi featuring a red tie-dyed inset. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth knot, adorned with a floral comb, ribbons, and a hairpin with delicate blue flowers. A charming design with wonderful embossed detail in the cat's fur, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 28 7/8" + 9 3/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Two panels, not attached at the seams. Toned and stains throughout as shown. Minor tears along edges, repaired from reverse. Minor soiling and spotting in subject with remnants from previous backing on reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
